Promoting positive mental health through advocacy, education, collaboration and service...

302 West Weaver Street, Carrboro, NC 27510

MHA/OC depends on volunteers to make a difference in our community.  If you are interested in volunteering, please give us a call or send us an email.  Below are some ideas of ways to get involved.

Compeer

As a Compeer volunteer, you would be matched in friendship with a person recovering from mental illness. You and your friend would spend time together for about an hour per week. Compeer friends do everyday things together- for example, they may meet for lunch or coffee, go for a walk, or play tennis. This award-winning program has been shown to reduce social isolation and improve quality of life for many participants. In addition, volunteers report that the program has enriched their lives in unforeseen ways. Training is provided, as well as ongoing support. A year-long commitment is required.

MHA/OC Compeer Program volunteers received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 1999. In addition, the MHA/OC Compeer program received the Outstanding Volunteer Recruitment Idea Award from the International Affiliation of Volunteer Programs in 2000.
