The Family Advocacy Network is a program of the MHA/OC and is comprised of trained family advocates who work to support the parents of high needs children. What makes FAN different is that our advocates are themselves parents who have experience raising challenging children. What we do... ¨ Family Advocates provide social support, help parents identify and understand resources available in the community, and provide education about raising children with mental health, behavioral, and developmental disorders. ¨ Family Advocates offer nonjudgmental assistance to primary caregivers who are negotiating complex service systems such as the school system, mental health/developmental disability/substance abuse system, juvenile justice, and the Department of Social Services, in order to promote collaborative relationships with agencies. ¨ Parent support groups connect parents who are working through similar challenges in parenting high needs children. ¨ FAN provides trainings for parents/caregivers and professionals on topics such as childhood mental health disorders, education law, and conflict management. Who we serve… ¨ We serve families in Orange County, NC. Our services are free and open to the public. ¨ Spanish speaking advocacy is available.
Why we do it… ¨ We know what it’s like to face the many challenges of raising children with complex needs and know that our community benefits when we reach out and work together. We believe that the earlier the intervention to address difficulties, the better the outcome. |
